Kurinuki Pottery Class
Carve. Slow down. Embrace the imperfect
Step into our cosy studio nestled in Sydney Inner West's Drummoyne and discover Kurinuki, a traditional Japanese pottery technique that means "to hollow." In this hands-on, beginner-friendly class, you'll start with a single solid block of clay and slowly carve it away to reveal an organic, one-of-a-kind vessel that's entirely your own.
What you'll do
Demonstration
Your experienced and friendly instructor kicks things off with live demonstrations, showing you the fundamentals of the Kurinuki carving technique and how to hollow, carve and refine a vessel from a single block of clay.
Relax while you sip
Settle in with your favourite drinks or snacks (BYO) and our complimentary cheese and crackers while you carve. The process is deeply calming, tactile and surprisingly freeing, perfect if you're looking to slow down and get out of your head.
Help at hand
With a maximum of 8 students per class, you'll enjoy plenty of one-on-one support in a relaxed, personalised and welcoming environment.
The results
Kurinuki is all about intuition and imperfection. Rather than aiming for symmetry, you'll be encouraged to work spontaneously and let the clay guide you as you carve and shape up to two functional vessels, such as cups or small bowls, embracing spontaneity and natural texture along the way.
We finish the pottery for you
Once complete, your pieces will be carefully dried, glazed in our studio glazes and high-fired to 1240°C. Your finished, food-safe ceramics, microwave, dishwasher and oven safe, will be ready to collect in approximately 4 to 5 weeks. Want to make extra pieces? Additional items are just $10 each.
